The company needed an automated solution to create shipments and streamline milestone and invoice communication. Shipment data from DCM/Maersk and Flexi Van is exchanged via EDI 204/214, while Amazon receives milestones and invoices in XML. Challenge

The company required a solution to automate the shipment creation process and ensure timely communication of shipment milestones and invoice updates to all stakeholders.

The Stakeholders:

1. DCM / Maersk

  • Sends shipment data via EDI 204
  • Receives milestone updates via EDI 214

2. Flexi Van

  • A leading chassis leasing company
  • Receives shipment movement milestones via EDI 214

3. Amazon

  • Receives milestones and invoices via XML
  • Also responsible for payment processing

Key Objectives:

• Automate shipment creation using EDI inputs.
• Enable real-time milestone communication with all three stakeholders.
• Automatically generate and share invoices with Amazon.
• Eliminate manual errors and delays.
• Maintain complete shipment lifecycle visibility.

Solution

To tackle these challenges, the firm partnered with Enkaytech, a trusted provider of enterprise integration and automation solutions. Enkaytech’s objective was to implement an automated middleware solution.

What Was Implemented:

• A middleware layer to manage all data transformation and routing.
• Real-time event-based communication between CW1 and external stakeholders.
• Robust logging, error-handling, and security protocols for uninterrupted operations.

Implementation

The integration project was complex, involving three stakeholders, multiple data formats (EDI & XML), and diverse transmission protocols (SFTP & AS2). Enkaytech carefully executed a phased implementation to avoid disruptions and ensure business continuity.

Implementation Breakdown:

1. Automated Shipment Generation

  • Middleware receives EDI 204 from DCM via secure AS2.
  • Shipment is auto created in our client’s CargoWise One.
  • Acknowledgement is sent back to DCM confirming receipt and processing.

2. Real-Time Milestone Updates

  • As milestones (e.g., Pickup, In-Transit, Delivered) are added in CW1, the middleware:
  • Sends EDI 214 to DCM and Flexi Van.
  • Sends XML milestone data to Amazon.

3. Automated Invoicing

When charges are posted in CW1:

  • Middleware formats and sends invoices in XML directly to Amazon for processing.
  • Reduces billing delays and ensures faster payment cycles.

4. Secure Communication

  • SFTP and AS2 were used for secure and reliable data exchange.
  • Comprehensive logging enabled auditability and rapid issue resolution.

Results

By implementing a phased approach, our client was able to receive shipment orders electronically within 4 weeks. And transitioned over to electronic invoicing with Amazon soon after!
